UNIDO UK Focal OfficeCapacity Statement
The UK Focal Office acts as a Investment and Technology Promotion Office (ITPO). The key roles of the ITPOs are to foster industrial partnerships between companies throughout the world, and to strengthen the technical capacities of client countries and institutions in order to improve their competitiveness on the international stage. ITPOs lie at the hub of the Investment and Technology Promotion Network (ITPN), which brings together UNIDO field offices, development finance institutions, investment promotion agencies, technology centres, sub-contracting exchanges and other partners via the UNIDO website. ITPOs are one stop shops for services crucial to investment promotion and technology transfer:
Matching project sponsors with potential investors UNIDO抯 Head Quarters in Vienna are currently designing the next Integrated Programme for China which will involve the ITPN. These programmes tackle complex industrial and environmental problems at the regional and country level and run for several years. They are designed through consultation with Government, environmental agencies and other intermediaries. The UNIDO ITPO Office has its Head Quarters in Beijing and is developing sub offices in the west of China such as Hebei Province. Through the ITPO Beijing the UK Focal Office has access to its network which includes, not only the sub offices but also Investment Agencies, government organisations and other intermediaries. Enterprise plc provides staff to run the UNIDO UK office and is currently involved in a major EU funded investment promotion project in China, targeting SMEs in specific growth sectors. This activity complements the work of UNIDO, strengthening the capacity of its sub-offices and developing and designing two way trade and investment initiatives. This is with the aim of improving services to client companies in China and the UK. Study visits to the UK for Chinese officials have been organised to learn about business support to SMEs and best practice in investment promotion. Trade missions have also been taken to China and Taiwan. February 2001 Meeting with UNIDO
