Chamber Business Enterprises/MCCIChamber Business Enterprises works to help companies in the region develop trade links with China, providing a range of information and advice services. The International team has a number of years experience of helping companies with information on the China market, including past participation in the European funded China Gateway N. W. project. Originally based within MCCI, and now within the joint venture company Chamber Business Enterprises – the international team totals 25 staff. A number of staff gained knowledge of the market through the China Gateway project and both the Head and Deputy Head of International have visited China and are regularly involved with incoming delegations; as a consequence, both have an excellent understanding of the economic situation and business culture in this key market. During this current year we have organised a mission to the football exhibition in Beijing, and in October a mission to Chongqing and Chengdu. All the companies taking part in the most recent mission to China were from the North West. The team have built up in-house information resources relating to the China market, work well with the Trade Partners UK China Unit and the China Britain Business Council and have strong relations with the both local Chinese Business Community and with the Chinese Consulate General in Manchester. Civic connections between the cities of Manchester and Salford with Wuhan and Chengdu provide valuable connections that are useful for companies. MCCI has formal co-operation agreements with a number of organisations which can provide information and support for companies:
The relationships between MCCI and the CCPIT and General Chambers in both cities are strengthening all the time: for example, a small group from Wuhan General Chamber visited MCCI in November 1999 to look at how a UK Chamber is run, the support services which are provided etc. In many cases MCCI’s links are complementary to the civic links, and we work closely to use these to help trade contacts. Whilst the team deal with enquiries and information requests covering the whole of China, a strategic decision has been made to focus proactive work largely on Wuhan, Chengdu and Chongqing – enabling us to build relationships on a long-term basis with both government bodies and organisations who can help develop business contacts in each area. Liaison through the British Embassy, the Consulate Generals and the CBBC offices in cities such as Wuhan and Chengdu provides invaluable assistance for companies. Chamber Business Enterprises is forming its International Trade Partnership for the sub-region, who will be asked to approve the on-going strategy for the China market. The first event being planned is a feature on China within the Export North West meeting on March 28th at Manchester Airport. This will be followed by further events still being planned and a Trade Partners UK supported mission to China – focusing on Chengdu, Wuhan and Chongqing in October. There will be sub-regional co-ordination of activity and a first meeting to create a draft programme for the forthcoming year is being held with partners on February 27th. Lynn Shaw 0161
