Liverpool City Council

The strong links between Shanghai, China's economic power house of the 21st Century, and Liverpool following the successful twinning will put the Lverpool based ChinaLink in a strategically key position for the UK - China business relationship.

With the oldest Chinatown in Europe and the long history of sea links, Liverpool and Shanghai has been linked for hundreds of years. The two cities have been linked between the similarity of their waterfronts, their maritime industries, and their footballs.

Since 1993 when Liverpool Chamber of Commerce twinned with Shanghai International Chamber of Commerce, trade links for the two cities have been sustained. Following a few high level exchange visits between the two cities Liverpool and Shanghai formally twinned in October 1999, celebrated by a Liverpool Activities Week in Shanghai including activities in civic, trade, music and football.

Photo Exhibition The civic relations between the two cities have been strong and active and both cities regard this link as one of their most important international links. The activities of exchange increased rapidly in civic, business, education, sports, culture, etc.

The Liverpool City Council has recently established a China Affairs Office, which will be co-located with ChinaLink, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The Office will co-ordinate the activities with Shanghai and other areas of China and work with ChinaLink to form a common programme for the Liverpool - Shanghai link.

In a result of the recent Mayoral visit to Shanghai organised by the Chinal Affairs Office, the two cities are discussing further co-operations.
