CHORLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL
In 2000 Chorley BC formally agreed a ‘Friendship Link’ (twinning) with the Lanzhou Municipal People’s Government, in Gansu Province, following on from delegation visits since 1997. The objectives of the link are broadly civic but include the intention to promote and support trade links between the two areas. To date Chinese delegations have visited a number of Chorley businesses with an interest in trade links and at the last visit in December 2000 Chorley held a business clinic for local companies to meet the delegation which included the General Manager of Lanzhou Import & Export Corporation. Contacts have also been made between various interested Chorley companies and contacts in Lanzhou. Chorley BC aims to encourage and facilitate potential trade links by the provision of contacts and information, arranging business clinics and trade missions. There is a small corporate budget for the costs of receiving delegations but otherwise only very limited resources for promoting trade links. In terms of staff resources, civic arrangements are made through the Chief Executive’s office; company visits and trade links are dealt with through the Economic Development and Tourism Unit. A delegation from Lanzhou is expected in June 2001; none of the delegates have a specific trade remit but we are waiting to hear what areas they wish to cover during this visit. We are also following up progress from the business clinic and visits last year. A return delegation from Chorley to Lanzhou is scheduled for 2002; it is anticipated that this will include a focus on furthering trade links.
